Fed at Year-End Target Rate
As expected, the Fed raised its federal funds rate by another 25 basis points to a target of 5-5.25%. The Fed also implied a pause in rate increases, though Chairman Jerome Powell hesitated to call it that in his press conference. Having boosted rates by a remarkable 500 basis points in 14 months, the Fed is at its projected policy rate for the end of 2023. The published comments make clear that it is focused more on the stubborn inflation challenge than on instability in the banking sector and the risk of more bank failures.
