Credit Tightening Further
The latest Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey confirms that lending standards are tightening for commercial and industrial loans as well as residential and commercial real estate as demand continues to fall. This is apparent at banks of all sizes, which is vaguely surprising given the greater regulator pressure applied to regional banks. Credit card lending has also tightened but demand remains firm. In a sign of consumer distress, credit card applications are still rising despite interest rates at record highs, but banks are rejecting more applications.
