Cracks in the Labor Market
Initial unemployment claims were revised up recently, painting a more negative outlook on the employment front. Claims had been falling since last summer. With the revisions, they are currently sitting at their highest level in over a year. Layoff announcements from companies also have been rising precipitously. A recent Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland study indicates these notices tend to lead initial claims by about 60 days, portending poor job reports in the offing.
